Monroe's uplands are Wynn silt loam (16 percent of the mapped ground), Xenia, Russell and Dana over glacial till, with Eden on the steeper slopes. Wynn runs about 40 percent clay in the subsoil and hits shale bedrock around 33 inches down. Eden is 48 percent clay with bedrock at 28 inches. Monroe is shallow-to-rock country. A wall footing or a trench deeper than about 30 inches can hit shale, which slows the dig and raises the price, and the clay above it holds a hard rain instead of soaking it in.
