How do you fix standing water around a house foundation?

Mason's ground formed in windblown silt over loamy glacial till. Xenia, Fincastle, Russell, Miamian and Brookston are the main soils. The surface layer is silt loam at 14 to 21 percent clay. Clay rises to 28 to 39 percent in the subsoil, and dense till slows drainage 30 to 60 inches down. Builders in the newer subdivisions strip that silt loam and compact what is under it, so the yard you bought is the subsoil, not the topsoil. Grading and patio bases here start on tighter ground than the soil map suggests, and a thin base over it heaves in the first winter.

About 32 percent of Mason's mapped soil holds a seasonal high water table within 12 inches of the surface between December and May. Hydrologic soil group C covers 47 percent of the rated area and group B/D another 32 percent. From December to May a trench on that ground fills on its own.
