Why are my paver patio stones sinking and becoming uneven?

No single soil runs under Lebanon. Miamian covers about 12 percent of the city, Wynn about 11, Russell about 10 and Xenia about 8, and more than half the city is mapped as urban land over those soils. The topsoil is silt loam at about 20 percent clay, and only about 4 percent of the city runs heavier than 27 percent clay at the surface. The clay sits underneath: Miamian subsoil runs 35 to 45 percent clay, and Wynn reaches 35 to 55 percent before shale bedrock about 29 inches down. So the top foot digs easily and the job starts below it. A patio base or a wall footing in Lebanon sits in that clay, and on the Wynn ground an excavation can hit shale under three feet, which changes the machine and the price before the first bucket moves.

Rain soaks in, reaches that layer and moves sideways instead of down. That is what perches water under a lawn, keeps a low spot wet for days after a storm and pushes moisture against a foundation. A fix that only moves the surface water leaves the ground underneath full, which is why the low spot comes back.
